In 2021 on residency in Sanquhar Scotland, I worked for a week at abandoned farm cottages. I made collages from found materials and took stencils to the windows to make paintings. The effect of these window paintings was surprising. Merging with old decals on the glass, the new paintings became a short-hand for passing time – a visual dialectic between the house’s present state and its past life. The cottages were also oddly familiar, very like the farm cottage in Angus where I had lived when I first migrated to Scotland in the early 90’s, around the time this place had been abandoned. Something about the different trajectories of these two similar places haunted me. The collision of personal memory and abstract painting was something I wanted to revisit.
