Summary
I can see you from my bubble, 2020, window painting, Edinburgh tenement. In the spring of 2020 at the start of lockdown the studio building in Dalry where I worked was closed in line with government regulations. In order to keep working I set up a small work place in my flat in Edinburgh. It was less than a quarter of the size of my normal studio. With very limited space to work in, I became fascinated by the idea of using the windows as a place to make paintings. The large scale and potential to experiment was exciting.
In our neighbourhood of traditional tenements there is not much vegetation save the neighbour’s lilac tree and my window boxes. As the ‘border’ between our lockdown existence and the outside world, the windows began to symbolise my longing for nature.
I began to experiment with time lapse video to record the changing light patterns through the window painting. Wind and changing light animated the painting bringing an uncanny world of light into our locked down flat.
