A great night last night at the Creative Reactions: Liminal State pop up exhibition at the Trades Hall in Glasgow. This was the final event of the PINT OF SCIENCE international science festival which took place in Glasgow last week. Creative Reactions: Liminal State featured 7 artists including myself (Michele Marcoux) Marta Fuster De Barutell, Jodi Le Bigre, Jessica Copping, Victoria Evans, Leontios Toumpouris, Shirley Wilson and also featured the work of Interactive Musical Scuplture from Art/Robotics team Artronix. Artists teamed up with Pint of Science speakers to create artwork inspired by scientific research from Glasgow University and were on hand last night to talk about their work and collaborations. Many thanks to Jennie Wright, Dwayne Spiteri and the team at Pint of Science
This was the first exhibition of work from my project GYRE (a work in progress) which involves the collection and documentation of plastic waste (specifically PET foil balloons) which I have collected for a number of years from beaches on Block Island, Rhode Island a small island off the east coast of the USA. Tied to our rituals of celebration and commemoration these objects when discarded cause huge environmental damage. GYRE explores the dynamic of how we discard once important items and looks at how consumerism and mass production contributes to our disengagement.
I’m looking forward to future collaborations with scientists I met through Pint of Science – a great opportunity for artistic and scientific communities to find commonalities of interest and research.
